Wendy Upson
Biography
Based in Clavering, Essex.
I worked as finance officer for the University of London for 22 years, but gave up work to concentrate on painting and drawing after studying for an Open University degree in History & Art History.
I completed the illustrations for a local history book, History Walks in Clavering by Jacqueline Cooper.
I am the Treasurer of the Saffron Walden Arts Trust and Chair of The Riverslade Gallery committee.
Statement
Although my work is firmly rooted in the figurative, there is often a subversive element to the subjects I choose. Not only do I use layers of paint, I use layers of meaning not always apparent to the viewer.
I grew up in an urban environment, but it has always been the natural world which has influenced my work – changing light, the texture of wood, the structure of trees, big skies and the elemental.
Media
I enjoy working in acrylic, tempera and ink, but also paint in oils, watercolours and pastels.
