Jeremy Nicholls
Biography
I make jewellery boxes, mirrors, small tables and other items in wood, which I decorate with original paintings on metal leaf. My paintings are usually inspired by landscape, trees or other natural forms. I make pieces to commission and paintings can also take a more specific starting point, for example a much-loved place or preferred theme.
After a career in both the public sector and industry I took the opportunity to try a different way of life. Since childhood I have always enjoyed making things, drawing and painting. As a grownup I taught myself to make furniture and some years ago I also learnt decorative painting techniques. Eventually I decided to combine these various elements in a new kind of painted furniture.
My approach to woodworking is simple and practical. The object must look pleasing and, above all, perform the function for which it is intended. The decorative painting provides the element which makes my work unique. I mainly use hardwoods such as oak, ash and maple. Some items include inlays in timber of contrasting colour and I sometimes use light colour washes to enhance the grain. All my work is finished to a high standard and will cope with normal domestic use. The final finish is beeswax, which needs to be treated with the same care as any other polished furniture, i.e. coasters should be used and spills should be wiped up straight away.
In addition to small items of furniture 1 also do paintings on wood panels. These started as 'practice pieces1 as 1 worked to improve my handling of the thin oil glazes I use over the metal leaf but they have become popular as small, inexpensive works in their own right.
In July 2004 I took part in Cambridge Open Studios for the first time and since then have participated in numerous craft shows. I have had work at the Riverslade Gallery in Saffron Walden, The Fiery Beacon Gallery, Painswick, Gloucestershire and the Dolphin Gallery and Studio, Lower Upnor
